Symptoms of Depression

Some of the symptoms of depression can be observed directly in the workplace. Their presence should be a signal that something's bothering an employee and he/she may need help. Symptoms, to which co-workers should be alert, include:

  • Apparent and lasting change in behavior
  • Apathy and lack of interest in job
  • Decreased efficiency
  • Pessimism
  • Avoiding going out together
  • Communication disorders
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Frequent absences
  • Outbursts of anger, irritability, tearfulness, lack of control over emotions
  • Giving up easily
  • Withdrawing into oneself
